The Hidden Dangers for Pets In Your Lawn
Every pet owner’s dream is to have a big well-maintained yard for their pets; they can run, sniff, and play tug-a-war as much as their hearts desire. However, the one thing that can be often overlooked is some of the things we use to make our lawns look pristine, can actually be harmful to our four-legged best friends. Here are some tips to keeping your yard safe for your pets:
The Unnatural Chemical
Certain herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides can be harmful if consumed by an animal. Keep pets inside or well away whenever you apply any chemical to your lawn, and make sure to let dry completely. Once the treatment has dried, be sure to rinse down the area with some water before letting the pups out for a game of fetch. Additionally, organic chemicals are a much safer bet for your pet’s safety, but still be vigilant about letting the chemicals dry and washing them away.
Not Good For Their Tummy
Fertilizer and mulch can really do a number on an animal’s stomach if eaten. And unfortunately, pets are rather attracted to fertilizer for its taste and mulch for its chewiness. When you are buying fertilizer make sure it is pet-friendly. As far as mulch, steer clear of the cocoa variety as they have similar ingredients that are found in chocolate and we all know that is a big no-no for dogs. Stone and rock mulch are usually the most pet-friendly choice and also natural mulches are a safe choice.
Pretty to the Eye, Toxic to the Pet
Certain plants can pose a risk to our pets as well. Plants like mushrooms can make any animal sick if the right kind is consumed. Some other plants that you might want to think about not planting altogether include:
- lily of the valley
- autumn crocuses
Lawn Maintenance Pet Safety
And as always, be sure your pets are somewhere safe before starting up your leaf blower or lawn mower. These make very loud noises, emit exhaust and can be downright scary for any pet. So make them comfortable inside before you take care of their lawn, on their behalf!
